1. Hi LØLØ! Please introduce yourself to those who might not know you.
Hi!! I’m LØLØ and I’m a singer/songwriter from Toronto, Canada :)
2. When did you first realize music was your path? Was there a specific moment or influence that solidified being an artist as your dream?
I always knew I wanted to be a singer, even when I was really young, though at first I was more into musical theatre. I didn’t start writing songs until the beginning of high school, when my guitar teacher encouraged me to try it. I remember him loving my first songs (even though they were probably awful), and he really hyped me up—he told me I could do this for a living and actually be an artist. I never thought I’d want to be an artist because I was so shy about my thoughts and feelings. The idea of writing a song and spilling my guts out felt embarrassing at first. But the more I did it, the more comfortable I became.
3. Was there a specific turning point—maybe a hit song, a pivotal moment, or a business move, when you realized, ‘I can really do this, and I can build a sustainable music career in this industry’?
I think I constantly am having those moments, then doubting myself again, then having more moments. My first was probably after my first single ever, which somehow made its way onto the radio in Canada. At that point I was like ‘oh, maybe this isn’t so hard after all!’ I got really lucky with my first song— I know normally it’s not that easy. I would say every time I sell out a show, or somebody tells me that my music saved their life… moments like those keep me going!
4. Your recent single, “me with no shirt on,” introduces a different sound for you. What inspired this shift, and what did you want listeners to take away from exploring this new side of your artistry?
I’ve been slowly slowly trying to go a little bit more back to my roots — a bit more singer songwriter / poppier vibes. I feel like I'm already an outlier in the rock/punk scene, so it wasn’t hard to make the jump. I really hope listeners like the more vulnerable side of me. I think it’s a little bit more me, and I'm not hiding behind big drums or guitars.
5. Can fans expect a more stripped down sound from you moving forward?
Yes, actually. I think my next album has a lot more of those tracks than people will expect! I hope they like it. I really love it!
6. How has your songwriting evolved from your earlier releases to this new chapter?
I feel like my songwriting just keeps getting a little bit more honest maybe? And maybe I'm censoring myself a little bit less every time as I get more comfortable. I do think my style, lyrically, has been pretty consistent through every release, though!
7. Your upcoming album, god forbid a girl spits out her feelings!, is a striking title. What is the meaning behind it? Is there a song on the album that pushed you creatively and emotionally while recording?
The name came to me at the very last minute, actually. Because I was dealing with a vocal issue, I didn't get a chance to add a few more songs onto the album about topics other than relationships that I was planning to record. I thought to myself that I'd probably receive some slack for that, as it’s something that I've gotten in the past. I then thought to myself, ugh, god forbid a girl spits out her feelings! I mean, those were just the songs I had been feeling at the time. I immediately wrote that down and wrote a song about it (which is the intro track on the album). So ironically, I got my song not about relationships in the process, haha.
I'm always striving to push myself creatively and emotionally. I think for this album since some songs are really stripped back, it really helps me focus on the song itself, the meat and potatoes of it, if you will. “lobotomy & u” was probably the most emotionally challenging to write — the whole time we wrote it we kept screaming, ‘THIS IS SO FKN SAD!!’
8. What do you hope fans who’ve grown alongside you since your first album hear differently about you on this new album?
I hope my fans appreciate the more stripped down tracks — in the past, I know my fans have loved the upbeat tracks, but I am really excited to show more of this side of me.
9. You opened for Simple Plan this past August and September — what was that experience like, and what did you take away from being on the road with such a legendary pop-punk band?
I am still a little shocked that this happened, to be honest! It was the coolest experience ever. I have been such a fan of them all of my life, so it’s hard to wrap my head around the idea that they’re my friends now. They're such good guys and they put on such an incredible show every night. I really feel honored to have had that opportunity— especially singing “Jet Lag” with them every night !!! Those guys are the real deal.
10. You recently opened up about your throat injury and the recovery journey you’re in right now. How has this experience changed the way you think about your voice and your approach to performing going forward?
It definitely scares me a lot! But I'm in vocal rehab right now and I'm going to be back to normal in no time! Funny enough I didn't injure myself from singing… I was in the best vocal shape of my life on the Simple Plan tour. After the tour, I went to see my friend's concert and I was screaming and pretending to be a crazy fan, and that’s when I did it. I'm definitely never screaming again. Please nobody ever scare me, lol.
11. Gritty is all about amplifying women and underrepresented voices in music — what’s one piece of advice you’d give rising artists trying to carve their own lane?
My advice would be, try not to care and just do your thing, however YOU like it! And I know, as artists, we care so fucking much… but I think you really need to let go of all your inhibitions and just present your art exactly how you want to present it. Don't make music for other people, make music for YOU, and you will find your people.
12. Which artists helped shape you as an artist musically or aesthetically?
Growing up my favorite artists were Green Day and Hilary Duff… and I really think that makes sense if you listen to my music now haha. Recently (ish) i love boygenius as well— they were a huge influence on my first album.
13. If you could collaborate with any artist, past or present, who would it be?
Billie Joe Armstrong FOR SURE, but I'd also love to write a song with Julia Michaels.
14. What would the movie of your life story be called, and who’s starring as you?
Wow this is a very hard and creative question. How about we call it “god forbid a girl spits out her feelings!” starring Anne Hathaway, but the Anne Hathaway era from The Princess Diaries.
15. What’s a musical achievement from this past year that you’re proud of?
I sold out my very first headline tour and doing my own tour was my biggest fear for the last few years, so I think that’s pretty cool!
